I am an artist based in Yorkshire and have always been interested in painting and won prizes at school. Drawing and design were important throughout my career in the plastics packaging industry. It was a not until I retired in 2007, from being a Director of an International manufacturing business, that I was a able to paint regularly.
In 2010 I gained a distinction in a Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art, Design and Media.
I am interested in a wide range of subject matter and my work always starts from drawings made on location and ideas developed in sketchbooks. I enjoy the challenge and process of extracting key features and building a dynamic and energetic image that expresses my ideas and feelings. Most paintings are made in the studio, generally on paper, using a wide range of materials including acrylic, water colour, pastel, charcoal, ink, collage and print. The work is often made in a series that explores the subject matter in different ways.
My paintings are an energetic and robust response to places that I know through frequent visits. These are not paintings of a place, but are about the place, the weather, atmosphere, the effects of mankind and nature. The information collected in sketchbooks is edited, simplified, and abstracted to create layered paintings that sometimes become completely abstract. I regularly visit Scotland, Ireland, Cumbria, Yorkshire and France to paint.
